I finished this portrait of my grandmother days before she passed away. I showed it to her but, even if her eyes were open, she was already leaving us slowly. I'd like to think she actually saw it and that it gave her peace and made her feel loved. It depicts a young Serafina, still living in Sicily, Italy, always bright and happy, with an impressive inner beauty. For many years it would be the last work I completed, until I slowly jumped back to my paintings.

My Aunt Nunzia was pregnant with one of my cousins. She was traveling through Europe and she says she looked terrible when she had her picture taken. Why did you choose this picture? I even had bags under my eyes! she told me. I replied, Aunt, do you see any eyes in this rendition?
